Electrical Engineering Major

Electrical Engineering (EE), housed within Penn’s Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering (ESE), lies at the center of modern technological innovation. The field plays a critical role in advances across telephony, 4G and next-generation wireless communications, mobile and satellite systems, fiber optics, electrical power and machinery, instrumentation, computer systems, microelectronics, robotics, graphics, automatic control, quantum technologies, and telecommunications. Nearly every modern technology is shaped in some way by electrical engineering.

Penn’s EE major is a flexible, broad-based program that provides students with a rigorous grounding in the analytical and experimental foundations of electrical engineering, while offering substantial freedom to design an individualized course of study. The degree requires 37 course units (CUs), combining strong core requirements with a wide range of advanced electives. This structure allows students to develop technical depth in areas of interest while also exploring interdisciplinary opportunities across engineering, science, and emerging technologies.

Through hands-on laboratory courses, design experiences, and exposure to cutting-edge research, students gain both practical skills and theoretical insight. Graduates of the program are well prepared for careers in industry, research, entrepreneurship, or advanced study, with the versatility to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The ESE department has given me many opportunities to learn, collaborate, meet mentors, and guide other students as a Teaching Assistant. Many of my best memories in the department have come from solving problems and making friends in the Detkin Lab. During my junior year, when working on course projects for ESE 5190 and 5160, my teammate and I started eating weekly hotpot meals as a break from work sessions, which we continued until graduation. Another fun memory from my Senior Design project was a late work session that turned unexpectedly into a night time promenade through the snow. Beyond coursework, being in the ESE department connected me with the people who defined my Penn experience.

When I think about my time at Penn engineering, I do not think of a single moment as my favorite memory, but rather a collection of the small, meaningful moments I have shared with the people around me. It is the countless hours spent in Detkin, troubleshooting circuits late into the night, and the in-between moments of laughing and commiserating with classmates over the challenges we didn’t quite understand yet. Those shared struggles and small victories brought us closer together. Over these past 4 years, my classmates became friends, and those friendships grew into something that feels just like family. Just as meaningful were the professors who advocated for us and invested in our growth. Whether it was quick conversations between classes, moments of encouragement when things felt overwhelming, these interactions changed my life’s trajectory. They reminded me that we are not just students in a classroom, but individuals they genuinely cared about and supported. I am forever grateful for these memories that Penn Engineering has brought me.

Electrical Engineering at Penn can easily be thought of as “The Umbrella Major.” It encompasses so many diverse subjects, allowing students to either specialize in one particular field or receive a broad understanding of different disciplines. The curriculum is structured so that students take the introductory courses in Circuitry, Nanosystems, and Decision Systems; afterwards, they’ll have the vocabulary and knowledge to determine whichever career path they are interested in while having a base understanding of all fields in EE. It’s a major that offers flexibility and depth, a true rarity.

The most amazing part about Penn Engineering is that at Penn Engineering is not just limited to the lab. I always believe that technology makes the largest impact when it’s brought to the actual market and interact with customers, and Penn makes it so easy for me to turn my ideas into reality – we have access to the equipment in the lab 24/7, and faculty members are always ready to help whenever my friends and I want to test out some new hardware ideas that we just came up with in Detkin Lab (it’s one of the EE Labs). Also amazing are all the opportunities available on campus – from hardware hack clubs to innovation funds and competitions, I have access to so many resources and mentors who have helped me much all along the way. Surrounded by such a community of innovative students, I’m learning new things and making progress every day.
