Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The Department of Electrical & Systems Engineering (ESE) at the University of Pennsylvania is committed to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all our students.

As an engineering department, we face biases and historical norms that we must change in order for our work to be useful in the present and relevant in the future. We have seen the effects of white supremacy, anti-black racism, gender bias, ableism, and ageism on our society and, more specifically, in higher education. We need to work to dismantle these systems within our community and center those pushed to the margins.

Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

ESE Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

To organize this transformation, we have formed the ESE Committee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) as a representative body of the department composed of student, staff, and faculty members seeking to create positive change. This committee aims to elevate minority voices, spearhead new DEI initiatives in the department, and work in tandem with other groups inside and outside Penn. As a committee, we aim to listen, learn, and act in ways that shape our ESE community into an environment where everyone can flourish.

Our committee advocates for the interests of all ESE community members, particularly those who are underrepresented or marginalized, promoting initiatives intended to eliminate discriminatory bias, resolve conflicts, and promote inclusion in our department, school, and university; in the broader engineering discipline; and in our local and global communities.
