Fellowship Opportunities

In the links below, you can find a collection of external fellowships from both industry and government. Please plan your submission material with plenty of time, since some of these fellowships require the collection of reference letters. Also, you should contact your advisor to help you propose a research topic aligned with the interests of your research lab. Finally, you can find help in the preparation of your material from the Penn’s Science Outreach Initiative (https://www.sas.upenn.edu/STEMoutreach/content/soi-staff), which provides support to, for example, Penn NSF-GRFP applicants, offering feedback on personal statements.

Microsoft Ada Lovelace Research Fellowship SEP 21  

Eligible: Second-year PhD students only

Requirements: For students from groups underrepresented in computing (women, African-Americans/Blacks, Latinos, American Indians/Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders, people with disabilities and/or LGBTQ).

Microsoft Research Ph.D. Fellowship SEP 30  

Eligible: Third-year PhD students only

Requirements: Fellows should support Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, as well as embrace opportunities to foster diverse and inclusive cultures within their communities.

Internal nomination process: Department nominates up to three (3) students. MSR contacts nominees who then submit respective nomination packets.

Term: 2 years

Google PhD Fellowship SEP 30  

Eligible: Full-time graduate students pursuing a PhD

Requirements: Completed graduate coursework by the Fall of the award year, when the Fellowship begins. Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.

Internal nomination process: Universities in the United States and Canada may nominate up to four eligible students from Computer Science or related fields.

Term: Up to 3 years

NSERC PostGraduate Scholarships (Doctoral) OCT 17  

Eligible: First- or second-year PhD students (or third-year students if they have not completed a master’s degree first). Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

Requirements: Research subject matter must clearly lie within the natural sciences and engineering (NSE), rather than the health sciences.

Term: Up to 3 years

Benefits: $21,000 CDN per year

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP) OCT 21  

Eligible: First- and second-year PhD students. Graduate students are limited to only one application, submitted either in the first year or in the second year of graduate school. US citizen, national, or permanent resident.

Encouraged: Women, members of underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, veterans.

Term: 3 years

Benefits: $34,000 stipend and $12,000 educational allowance, per year.

Hertz Fellowship OCT 23  

Eligible: First-year students in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering

Requirement: US citizen or permanent resident

Term: Up to 5 years (2 options)

Benefits of Option 1: $34,000/ 9-month personal stipend, full tuition equivalent, renewable for up to 5 years. $5,000/year stipend for fellows with dependent children.

Benefits of Option 2: Coordination with Another Awarding Institution—If you receive a fellowship, scholarship, or grant offer from another institution, Hertz will coordinate to make sure student can take advantage of each offer and receive the maximum possible compensation.

IBM Ph.D. Fellowship OCT 23  

Eligible: Second- or third-year students

Requirements: The program engages exceptional students interested in IBM technologies. For 2021, the PhD Fellowship Program focuses Hybrid Cloud, Quantum Computing / Quantum Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud / Open Source Technologies, Security / Cyber Security, Data Science, and Systems.

Internal nomination process: Only faculty may nominate students. A nomination includes the student’s CV, faculty nominator’s supporting statement, department head’s supporting statement, PhD thesis title, and a brief description of PhD thesis work. No more than three nominations per department may be submitted.

Term: 2 years

Benefits: $60,000, first year; $35,000, following year.

Other: All IBM PhD Fellowship awardees will be mentored by an IBMer in order to collaborate on a research or technology project for the duration of the award period and are strongly encouraged to do an internship during the first or second year of their award.

Soros Fellowships for New Americans OCT 29  

Eligible: First- and second-year PhDs. (Bachelor’s degree by Fall 2021.)

Requirements: New Americans—immigrants and children of immigrants—who are poised to make significant contributions to US society, culture, or their academic field. (Born in the US to immigrant parents; born abroad; naturalized; citizen; adopted; green card; refugee & asylees; non-citizen who graduated from US high school or college, if none above apply. Age 30 or younger.

Term: 2 years

Benefits: Up to $90,000 in financial support over two years

Other: Lifelong community of New American Fellows.

NDSEG Fellowship NOV 1  

Eligible: First- and second-Year PhDs

Requirements: US citizen, national, or U.S. dual citizen

Encouraged: Applications from women, persons with disabilities and minorities, including members of ethnic minority groups such as Native American, African American, Hispanic American, Native Alaskan (Eskimo and Aleut) or Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian).

Term: Up to 3 years

Benefits: Full tuition and all mandatory fees; a monthly stipend ($38,400 annually).

Other: $5,000 travel budget over the Fellow’s tenure for professional development; Up to $1,200 a year in health insurance.

NASA Space Technology Research Opportunities (NSTGRO) NOV 5  

Eligible: Students pursuing (or planning to pursue) master’s or doctoral degrees relevant to space technology. Students with disabilities and/or from underrepresented minority groups are urged to have proposals submitted on their behalf. Detailed eligibility profiles in link.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree prior to Fall 2020. US citizen/national/permanent resident.

Term: 1-4 years

Benefits: Grant awards up to $80,000/year can include stipend, faculty advisor allowance, visiting technologist experience allowance, health insurance, tuition and fees.

Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future NOV 9  

Eligible: Women from developing and emerging countries who wish to pursue PhD or Post-doctoral research in STEM at a university abroad.

Requirements: Excellent academic record, demonstrated leadership skills, community outreach activities and a track record in encouraging girls and women into STEM fields. Proven commitment to return to home countries upon completion of their studies to contribute to the economic, social and technological advancement of their home regions.

Term: 1 year, renewable until completion of studies

Benefits:

SCGSR Program

GEM Graduate Fellowship NOV 13  

Eligible: First- to fifth-year  PhDs

Requirements: US citizen/permanent resident; Under-representation (American Indian/Native; African American/Black; Hispanic American/Latino); must apply to a minimum of 3 GEM Member Universities, directly to the relevant STEM department by their published deadline; GEM-Member university; must contractually agree to intern with a GEM Employer member the summer immediately after sponsorship.

Term: Up to 5 years

Benefits: Full tuition and fees; $16,000 stipend/yr.

Other: Additional stipend (assistantships, grants, other stipend dollars) support from GEM Member University to bring the stipend amount up to the funding level of other funded PhD students in that department.

American Association of University Women (AAUW): International Fellowships NOV 15  

Eligible: First- to Fifth-year PhDs; Postdocs

Requirements: Women scholars who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, the arts or scientific fields.

Term: 1 year, renewable for a second year

Benefits: $18,000–$30,000

Croucher Foundation Scholarships for Doctoral Study NOV 16  

Eligible: PhD up to and including third-year

Requirements: Hong Kong permanent residency; commitment to full-time study or research in natural sciences, medicine or technology in approved academic institutions outside Hong Kong. First Class Honours in first degree.

Term: Up to 3 years

Benefits: Tuition and fees; $30,300/year annual maintenance.

Benefits: Full tuition; $25,000 – $38,000 a year stipend, dependent on degree level.

Other: Summer internships, 8-12 weeks; SMART is a one-for-one commitment; for every year of degree funding, the scholar commits to working for a year with the DoD as a civilian employee.

Graduate Fellowships for STEM Diversity (GFSD) DEC 1  

Eligible: Any stage of PhD program

Requirements: US citizen. Must have the ability to pursue graduate work at an GFSD university associate.

Term: 2-3 years initially; up to 6 years.

Benefits: Full tuition and required fees; $20,000 expense allowance.

Other: Allows a research or teaching assistantship; Paid summer internships with the sponsor; Mentor from the sponsoring agency.

Ford Foundation Fellowships DEC 10 DEC 17  

Eligible: Dissertation and Postdoctoral (DEC 10); Predoctoral (DEC 17)

Requirements: US Citizens/Nationals/Permanent Residents; Grantees of Deferred Action Status under DACA; Indigenous individuals exercising rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794; Individuals granted Temporary Protected Status; Political asylees; and Refugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation.
